Samsung Electronics completely withdraws from LED business, Galux can be the replacement completely

In mid-September,2024, Korean media Newsway reported that Samsung intends to launch the LED business.

Samsung Electronics' LED business belongs to its DS department, which mainly includes three major areas: lighting equipment, TV and automotive (automotive electrical equipment).

It is reported that the LED chip production line for lighting equipment will be cleaned up first in the second half of this year (2024), and it is expected that the lighting business within the CSS business team will be ended by the first half of 2026, and the TV backlight business will be ended in the second half of the year. In addition, it is expected to completely withdraw from the automotive lighting business by 2030.

Samsung's decision to withdraw from the LED business is due to the fact that the profitability of the LED business has dropped significantly due to the proliferation of low-priced products and intensified competition, so Samsung hopes to focus resources on the relatively more promising semiconductor field.

According to reports, the existing LED business team personnel are expected to be reallocated to power semiconductors, Micro LED, as well as memory, packaging and other fields.

Samsung Electronics' third-quarter performance is not optimistic. According to its unaudited preliminary third-quarter performance data released on the 8th Oct, its operating profit was 9.1 trillion Won (about 47.593 billion CNY, October 8 exchange rate: 1 won ≈ 0.0052 CNY), far lower than the market's initial expectation of 13 trillion Won (about 67.99 billion Yuan) to 14 trillion Won (about 73.22 billion Yuan), and even failed to reach the analyst's estimate of 10.3 trillion Won (about 53.869 billion Yuan).
